Verizon Omnia GPS Unlock Update – Promise Broken!
UPDATE: See http://www.tnet.com/blogged/2009/07/16/new-official-rom-released-for-omnia-i910/
Verizion said it would unlock the GPS in the Samsung Omnia by the end of the
2nd QTR….
Well, they apparently didn’t bother. They did release a GPS unlock for the HTC Touch Pro and the Samsung Sage, and they were forced by RIM to correct it on the BB Storm, but clearly they broke their promise on doing it for the Omnia i910.
“Don’t be afraid of dead zones” Right!
Apparently, Verizon is the “DEAD ZONE” in keeping its promises as in like, not keeping them.
I’ve got 4 other family members who have devices with unlocked GPS capabilities in their cell phones, none of whom even care about the feature. ALL of them with AT&T. The only family member that could actually use it, is me with a locked “Broken Promise” GPS Verizon Wireless Omnia i910.
See if I sign up for another 2 year agreement with Verizon now. Not likely.
Planned purchase of the new MiFi 2200 – CANCELED
Plan migration of the rest of the family to Verizon (3 of 4 have data plans) – CANCELED
Plan to purchase any new phones from Verizon – CANCELED
UPDATE: It appears that Verizon is reading the release of a new ROM CF03. The links to the actual download are not yet active. *Edited* 2009/07/15

Not only broken promises, but with this being such a great phone one would think there would be more support not only thru Verizon, but Samsung as well. You can raise that migration tally by two more as I will not be migrating my wife and daughter over to verixon, in fact im thinking its time dare I say it to go with a (iPhone). While I think the Omnia is superior in many ways, and while it may take apple a couple of iterations to get where they are going, at least they get there.
Are you aware that there is an unofficial ROM update for the i910 Verizon Omnia that unlocks the GPS? It’s supposedly a leaked version of the gps unlock ROM Samsung was producing for Verizon. I have been running it on my Omnia for a few weeks now.
Wayne, yes I have. In fact if you look a bit further down in my blog you can see that I have been using the “Unofficial” Leaked Rom since early April.
But that is NOT an official Verizon release, it is not supported by Verizon and it does not mean that Verizon has released a fix for the GPS as promised.
I agree.. I called yesterday and their tech support does not have a clue when this is supposed to happen nor has there been a press release stating why they have not kept up with their end of the bargain.
I feel that fair compensation until they unlock the GPS functionality is to offer their propitiatory software (vznavigator) for free.
Well, since they never broke a promise, not sure why you would post lies such as you have. They said they are “targeting” by the end of the 2nd quarter, but if you know anything about programming, it’s exactly that, a target. The web page is already up for the update (someone figured it out) and we are just waiting on the link to be changed to an actual link to the ROM. So we know they are close.
Masseur, actually, yes they broke their “promise”. The email that I received didn’t use the wording “targeting”, instead said released by.
The whole reason why I kept the device was because it was going to be unlocked. This was received within my trial period.
The fact they waited until AFTER the 2nd QTR ended, is not excusable.
Now that the have actually released the update, it makes the device more useful, but they still lost out on a number of sales as a result of their failure to release when they said they would.
Will see what the update provides… nice that there is an officially unlocked ROM.
