Extending Offline time

MP-1800The new MiFi is great… but the battery life is fairly short at between 3-4 hours.  I need a solution where I can be unplugged for much longer periods.

So I picked up a Tekkeon MP1800 external battery pack.  This is s self-contained battery that charges via USB or Wall socket (note the wall plug is NOT included).  After being fully charged, it can be used to power a lot of different devices such as Cell Phones and … a MiFi card.

I did an online endurance test yesterday and was able to maintain a WiFi connection of the MiFi with the extended battery for more than 14 hours continuously.

When I halted the test because I didn’t want to leave my Netbook running unattended, the MP1800 still had power to give and the MiFi itself was fully charged.  So even if the MP1800 had died then, I still would have had at least another 3-4 hours left.

The only issue I’ve had is that I can’t power the MP1800 at the same time as it is providing power as the manual suggests can be done.  When I try, it faults the USB port and shuts down the Notebook and Netbook.  I’ve sent an inquiry to Tekkeon to find out what is going on there…

The device comes with a variety of tips that include Samsung, Mini-USB, Micro-USB and others but does NOT include the wall adapter that is shown in the manual.  It comes with a black carry pouch as well.

Note was sent by Stephen Schwed…

I flashed one of my Omnia i910’s last night.  Smooth install, took longer to download the software than to do the flash.  Flashing took aprox 7 mins.

GPS is unlocked and it appears that the aGPS functionality is there unlike the Rom upgrade for the Samsung Saga.

Not a lot of additional changes noted, but I don’t have service on that phone to really check it out.  Will flash my main phone Friday sometime after I make sure I have copies of everything.  I want to reload everything from scratch to get the most out of memory etc.

Verizon Omnia GPS Unlock Update – Promise Broken!

UPDATE: See http://www.tnet.com/blogged/2009/07/16/new-official-rom-released-for-omnia-i910/

Verizion said it would unlock the GPS in the Samsung Omnia by the end of the vwbp012nd QTR….

Well, they apparently didn’t bother.  They did release a GPS unlock for the HTC Touch Pro and the Samsung Sage, and they were forced by RIM to correct it on the BB Storm, but clearly they broke their promise on doing it for the Omnia i910.

Don’t be afraid of dead zones” Right!

Apparently, Verizon is the “DEAD ZONE” in keeping its promises as in like, not keeping them.

I’ve got 4 other family members who have devices with unlocked GPS capabilities in their cell phones, none of whom even care about the feature.  ALL of them with AT&T. The only family member that could actually use it, is me with a locked “Broken Promise” GPS Verizon Wireless Omnia i910.

See if I sign up for another 2 year agreement with Verizon now. Not likely.

Planned purchase of the new MiFi 2200 – CANCELED

Plan migration of the rest of the family to Verizon (3 of 4 have data plans) – CANCELED

Plan to purchase any new phones from Verizon – CANCELED

UPDATE: It appears that Verizon is reading the release of a new ROM CF03.  The links to the actual download are not yet active. *Edited* 2009/07/15

“Don’t be afraid of dead zones.”

Awaken in the night…

Every night after I’ve fallen asleep, I sometimes get awaken by my phone letting meAwake! kindly know that is has been fully charged…

Nice… but I really don’t need to know that.

There is no apparent way to turn this off though.

Just found a post that appears to fix that.  I will give it a try during the day to see what happens.

Posting was on Modaco…

Omnia – Fix Ring Tone Volume

Some find annoying the ring tone adjustment that comes standard on the Omnia i910.  When a call comes in, the ring tone is muted a bit and then goes to full volume.

The following Registry Change fixes this so that the volume is full volume on the first ring.

HKCU\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring\AttenuationCategory

Change value to 1

You need to use a registry editor like Resco Explorer or other registry editor (like CeRegEditor), to make this change.

After the change, wait 20 seconds and then do a soft reboot.

Note: This apparently does NOT work on the i900 version of the phone.

Other settings for this value are:

0 is no ringtone volume
1 is flat ringtone volume
2 is increasing ringtone volume

Luvin my Omnia

I’ve had my Omnia now for more than a month. Best phone so far. With it I can access just about everything, including managing and posting on this blog.

This post was made using it with the included Opera browser.

WM6 Stop SMS Sent Message Notification

Loaded some SMS chat software that wanted to to test and when I removed it I now had an SMS Sent Message Notification each time I sent a new SMS message.  Annoying…

Even though I already had unchecked the Request Delivery Notifications in:

Messaging -> Text Messages -> Tools -> Options -> Text Messages

It was still being sent.

So I turned it off with aRegistry Hack

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings\SMSNoSentMsg = 1
It is a Decimal DWORD.

For me, the key didn’t exist, but as soon as I added it… presto, no more sent message notifications.

Omnia Retractable Data/Power Cable

One of the first things that I got for my new phone was a retractable data/power cable.

omnia-cable-03

Mini-Sync Omnia Cable

I needed a data/charge cable, preferably one that retracts that I could carry with me that worked plugged into any USB power source.

Apparently, Samsung did some tricks and some how prevents the device from charging unless you use power from an AC USB device or a USB from a computer. Cigarette lighter USB connections didn’t work.

This cable solves that by having two plugs on the phone end. One for plugging into just a power device (including Cigarette lighter USB adapters), and one for plugging into a computer for data and charging.

Works great.

Cable Unretracted

Cable Unretracted

Note that this did not come with any instructions at all, but the plug that has the symbols on it, is for AC power or USB non-computer power connections.

Also, these showed up FAST!. I ordered them on a Thursday and they arrived on Saturday.

Price: $19.95
