By default, the MiFi will not work as a WiFi portal when it is being used via the USB connection.

One way to deal with this is to use a Charging ONLY cable which would allow you to charge the MiFi but still use it as a WiFi portal. Kind of inconvenient.

Found a posting that opened another way and in fact, I am currently using it in this configuration right now as I type this. When connected to the WiFi connection (not USB), access the Management screen and in Advanced-^gt;Config tab, download the current configuration file. This will be in XML format.

Then change the setting:

<routeroverusb>1</routeroverusb>

So there is a 1 as the value you like above. Then re-upload the configuration file. The MiFi will reset and you can then plug it in as a USB connection and it will still operate as a WiFi portal.

After you turn on the settings, I would do a soft reset. Then while standing (or sitting) outside, start up Google Maps. It will take sometime to get your first lock. I have Google Maps setup to use "Managed by Windows". YMMV

I updated my primary phone about a week ago. Works basically the same as before, but the GPS is unlocked.

There is some aGPS functionality, but it doesn't necessarily extend to 3rd party programs.

I don't use GPS often, but it doesn't take too long to lock.
